Most of my career has been on the consulting side, which means I get handed problems before anyone's sure what they are. Sometimes it's a website that needs to work harder. More often it's a tangled system that a whole organization runs on, where nothing's simple and everything connects.
The work changes, but I always start the same way, pulling threads until it's clear what we're building. Without that, it's easy to build the wrong thing well.
